Over the past few weeks, tracking the new Google Analytics Real-Time reporting interface has been somewhat hypnotic. But aside from the casual fascination of watching users pop on and off your site as the seconds roll by I struggled to see how business owners could use it to real benefit. That was until I hit ‘send’ on our latest monthly e-Newsletter and realised the true power of Google’s live reports. [Read more →]
It can be extremely difficult to predict how your software is going to be used. No matter how much planning goes into the design, your ideas may be different to the expectations of your users or too complicated for them to grasp quickly. Innovation is tough to get right the first time, so you need to be flexible. [Read more →]
Chris: Hello and welcome to the Innovators Series on KND TV. I’m Chris Garrett and today I’m joined by Craig Spink who’s a professional musician, solicitor and startup software developer. Thanks for joining us, Craig.
You are curently rolling out a large online software product called Invaulta. Can you tell us about that?

Essentially it stores individual’s legal documents, financial documents and their personal documents. For many businesses a new website going live is something to be celebrated. The temptation is to tick that project off the list, sit back and watch the sales come in. The trouble is, it rarely works this way. [Read more →]
An article in BRW magazine last year (Dec 1-7 p35 “Start spreading the newsletter”) highlighted some research out of the US indicating that, for every $1 a company spends on marketing emails, the return is $40.56, “better than almost any other form of marketing”. [Read more →]
After much preparation and imagining the worst, Jason embarked on one of his biggest and possibly maddest ‘bucket list’ adventures. On Boxing Day he joined the Rolex Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race fleet with 8 others on board Mondo.
The 4+ day marathon wasn’t without incident, including a 40 knot storm on the first night, a busted shoulder and an iPhone now sitting at the bottom of Bass Strait, however the crew (and boat, a Sydney 38) did a fantastic job and they arrived in Hobart to a thunderous applause in great spirits.
Stop press: On 2nd December, SmartCompany reported that $1.25 billion was spent online on ‘Cyber Monday‘ this year (the online equivalent of the January sales). Only the second billion-dollar spending day on record after – you guessed it – Cyber Monday 2010. [Read more →]

KND has been designing and building web applications and ‘software’ style websites for almost ten years now and we’ve experienced both spectacular success and epic failure of projects for a variety reasons. In the words of Woody Allen, “If you are not failing every now and then, you are not doing anything very innovative”, and in the world of web application development, this is so very true.
A few months ago we posted an article, (Fresh is best! Original content bears fruit) about how Google loves fresh content and will rank your website higher if you post regularly. It’s easy to say, but quite another thing to make it actually happen! We know from personal experience how hard it can be to be constantly creating new content for our website and monthly enewsletter. Most businesses are not natural ‘publishing houses’ and there is often no-one specifically tasked with making sure that fresh, and interesting (and of course relevant) content is written. The web is a bargain hunter’s paradise and it now has yet another way to save a buck. Coupon sites like Cudo are the latest way to offer rock-bottom prices and drive traffic to mostly service or experience based businesses. [Read more →]
KND Digital: Welcome to the Innovators Series on KND TV. Today, we are joined by Adam Penberthy from Think Fresh. He’s an expert in youth marketing and advertising. So Adam, tell us about Fresh.
Adam: Basically, Fresh is a youth ad agency. We work on specific youth focused campaigns that connect and engage the sub 30’s.
The majority of the work we’re engaged in is digital projects. We do a lot of work with social media to optimise campaigns and create buzz with the youth demographic.
…after reviewing some advice we gave three years ago, and deciding it is still current today (with some additions).
Back in 2008 we wrote a short article and filmed a 15 minute podcast and video presentation on ‘The Website Sales Funnel‘. Reviewing this in 2011, again all the basics are absolutely spot on, however there is still a degree of confusion out there about how marketing and business works online. [Read more →]
